The South End Stories Youth Blog is looking for committed and passionate Youth Editors for the 2020-2021 school year. Come join our team!
South End Stories is a nonprofit organization that offers healing through history, creativity, and trauma-informed art practices to students and educators. Our Youth Blog, launched this summer, is a youth led, BIPOC-centered space lifting up the voices and art of young people across Seattle and South King County. Since launching, we have already received 1,000 post views. Some of these likes and views come from adults. But the majority come from youth themselves. Young people appreciate, want, and need spaces to tell their own stories in their own ways.
We believe that creating a space for and by young people is vital to inclusion, progress, and art —specifically in the South End and especially during a time of Covid, BLM, and a presidential election. We—Aliyah, Moriah, and Chapel—have had so much fun helping to kick-start this blog. We love the people we have been able to work with and the stories we have seen told, but it is time for this incredible blog to shift to new hands.
Being a South End Stories Youth Blog Editor requires teamwork and strong collaborative skills. You will work with other youth leaders, youth contributors, and our amazing advisor from The South Seattle Emerald—Sharon Ho Chang. This space is yours to cultivate, and ultimately we are passing over the reins because we trust your judgment in what this blog needs.
You will have freedom to find out what works best for you and your team. We publish twice a week, and work on getting as many diverse outside contributors as possible, young people from all backgrounds who can showcase many types of art and perspectives. You will need to keep a timely schedule within what’s doable, but this does require commitment to your team and posting regularly.
While we love getting as many contributors as possible to include in the blog, there will be weeks when you will need to write your own pieces, which means getting sources and conducting interviews for quotes. We are looking for young people who are excited about art and storytelling, and committed to creating positive change. We strongly encourage South Seattle and South King County youth to apply, especially QTPOC, students from immigrant families, and young activists.
We have monthly meetings over Zoom, so you will need to show up on time, ready to bring ideas to the group. We often communicate over email and text, which requires access to a device that can accommodate. South End Stories can provide a device if you need it.
The South End Stories Youth Blog Editor contributes 5 hours per week for an educational stipend, with the opportunity to add unpaid hours for fulfilling community service requirements.
